The city sucks. @o@?!

My English teacher once told me that the city he stayed "sucked".

I thought we could use this word to describe anything we don't like.

But later I found that this word should be used carefully.

In one movie I saw before, there was a conversation going like this:

a little boy picked up his toy and said,"this stuff sucks".

Then his mother turned around and said,"Watch your language".

Is this word a kind of four-letter words (vulgar language)?

Or are they commonly used among boys but a lady had better not to use it,

like the Chinese word "爽"?

已更新項目:

Thanks you guys for your clear explanations.

I'll think twice before I use this word.

    NO1票數最高,理由很簡單,不是因為他答得特別好、特別貼切,而是大部分的人看不懂英文,也沒耐心看完。就醬.......

Suck does not mean euqally as FXXK <-- U know

Remember, your English teacher told you that the city he stayed sucked. This was just a social conversation. "sucked" in here just means he really really really hated the city, but he didn't use the word to against anybody or to be disrespectful to anyone. The word only applies to him, to his own experience of staying in the city sucked ass.

Ok, here, in the movie, the boy picked up his toy and said, "this stuff sucks"

Then his mother turned around and said,"Watch your language".

Here, obviously the boy does not like the toy, but when he used the word "sucks", is against his mom, because his mom must have bought the boy for him, but he does not appreciate it, instead, he said "this stuff sucks" to tell his mom that he hates it very much.

This is disrespectful TO THE MOTHER, that's why she said watch your language.

As long as the word only applies on you, or situation you've been, it's okay to say "it sucks"

well, it's surely not a very, you know, "nice" word, like "pissed off" (I know I shouldn't have used it too often, I use it anyway.)but I think it's just a way for ppl to express themselves. I don't believe things like "it's okay for boys to say it but not gals" that kinda sh*t...totally BS. It's perfectly fine to use such word around your peers. When we're with the elder or something, we should always be careful with our language. Personally, I'd use it when I think something is really bad and intolerable coz it fits well.

It sounds bad...but colloqually it's fineThere are lots of people using such expression. But just make sure that you don't use it in front of older people. They'll definitely feel offended.

The word "sucks" consider not polite as a street talk. Even though, there are a lot of people saying this word quite often, but it never consider for the young ones to say it even the red-necks will ban their kid to say it until they are older.
