The subjects were confined in the metabolic research unit (MRU) of the Western Human Nutrition Research Center for the first 18 d followed by a 129-d free-living period and the second 18 d in the MRU.
They were fed diets containing 1.6 mg of copper (as copper sulfate) per day during the first 18-d period and were given copper supplements (7 mg of copper per day) with their regular diets for 129 d. After this period, they returned to the MRU for the second 18-d period and were fed the diets supplemented with copper (6.2 mg/d), resulting in a total copper intake of 7.8 mg/d.
This dose is approximately the amount of copper that would be ingested if a person consumed a normal diet and two or three commercially available multivitamin and mineral tablets each day.
During the first and second periods in the MRU, they were given identical 3-d rotating diets that contained the recommended amounts of all known essential nutrients. Compliance was checked by counting pills and by stool collections twice during the free-living period. These suggested that compliance was about 85% to 90% during the free-living period. During the MRU period, the additional copper was added to the diet.
