“You know, that has always frustrated me. I’ve always thought of myself as a good judge of character, but some of the people I’ve put my money on just never lived up to expectations. That’s what I fear about Bob, that he’s never going to reach his potential.”

“What kinds of expectations does Bob have of himself?”

“He’s never talked much about them to me. I guess I really don’t know. Maybe he really doesn’t have any.”

“Sometimes people need someone else to name the greatness inside them. Isn’t that how you got started?”

“I don’t understand.”

“Think back when you first went to work for Ramoco,” she began. “Do you remember your first boss?”

“I certainly do.” He smiled for the first time that evening.

Just then, a bird began chirping. Soon another bird joined in and, before long, the entire flock was chattering.

“It was Hugh Powell,” he continued, “one of the finest men I have ever known. I still think of him often and wish he were around so I could talk with him.”

“Remember the time you were so discouraged you were about to quit Ramoco?”

Harry nodded.

“You had been given your first promotion,” she said. “As a new manager you were received with something less than enthusiasm by your subordinates. Some of the older ones who had been bypassed for promotion resented you and took every opportunity to let you know that they had more experience on the job than you, and implied that they could make you or break you.”

You know, that has always frustrated me. I’ve always thought of myself as a good judge of character, but some of the people I’ve put my money on just never lived up to expectations. That’s what I fear about Bob, that he’s never going to reach his potential.

What kinds of expectations does Bob have of himself?

    Bob

He’s never talked much about them to me. I guess I really don’t know. Maybe he really doesn’t have any.

Sometimes people need someone else to name the greatness inside them. Isn’t that how you got started?

    I don’t understand.

Think back when you first went to work for Ramoco, she began. Do you remember your first boss?

I certainly do. He smiled for the first time that evening.

Just then, a bird began chirping. Soon another bird joined in and, before long, the entire flock was chattering.

It was Hugh Powell, he continued, one of the finest men I have ever known. I still think of him often and wish he were around so I could talk with him.

Remember the time you were so discouraged you were about to quit Ramoco?

    Harry nodded.

You had been given your first promotion, she said. As a new manager you were received with something less than enthusiasm by your subordinates.

Some of the older ones who had been bypassed for promotion resented you and took every opportunity to let you know that they had more experience on the job than you, and implied that they could make you or break you.
