Ig Nobel Prize算是諾貝爾獎搞笑版,其宗旨為「Every Ig Nobel Prize winner has done something that first makes people LAUGH, then makes them THINK.」,別小看選出來的得獎者,可都也是有學術研究成果的呢!搞笑諾貝爾和平獎就曾頒給卡拉OK的發明人井上大佑(Daisuke Inoue),獲獎理由是提供了人類一個學習彼此容忍的新方式!去思考這些人得獎的理由還真是挺有創意的...

Every Ig Nobel Prize winner has done something that first makes people LAUGH, then makes them THINK.

    每一位Ig諾貝爾獎得主都曾創造出"首先令人發笑, 接著令人思考"的事物.

An award for the ignoble or the ignorant

    www.4430.com 2004-1-4 時時想你網

WE all know about the Nobel Prize. It's a top-notch academic award, lauding the world's brightest minds for making the world a better place. But have you heard about the Ig Nobel?

It made headlines recently as an awards ceremony being held a week earlier than the Nobel Prize. Some Chinese know it as "最無聊滑稽諾貝爾獎" because that's how some of the media have translated it. So, where does "Ig" come from? And, is it properly translated?

The Ig Nobel differ from the real Nobels in honouring people whose work might tickle your funny bone. The American founder, Marc Abrahams, says that the primary selection criteria are: things "that make you laugh." It was started in 1991, and there are 10 prize winners each year. It has grown into an international awards ceremony and is broadcast all over the world.

However, there's no real agreement on what the word "Ig" stands for. And Marc Abrahams isn't offering his own interpretation. Perhaps he enjoys leaving it open to question. There are, however, two equally plausible explanations for "Ig": "ignoble" and "ignorant". The one that seems to present itself immediately is "ignoble". That's because it is pronounced almost exactly the same as the award title.

The Cambridge International Dictionary of English explains "ignoble" as "something you should be ashamed of (卑鄙的、不體面的、無耻的)". For example: She was accused by critics of playing an ignoble part in a good movie.

It originally means "not noble", that is, dishonourable; but, it has the sense of "common" or "something of which one ought to be ashamed." Because of its "noble" origins, the word is still mostly found in literature. In this case, the translation of "Ig Nobel" could be "難登大雅之堂的諾貝爾獎", which touches upon the funny nature of the prize and their absurdity.

On the other hand, the word "Ig" might stand for "Ignorant," which means "having no knowledge or awareness of something (無知、愚蠢)." It comes from the verb "ignore", meaning "intentionally not listening or paying attention to something (忽視、忽略)." So, technically, "Ig Nobels" might be translated as "(無知諾貝爾獎)"; meaning the opposite of what the Nobel Prizes honour, ie people famed for their knowledge. In modern English "ignorant" often means "stupid" but can mean "aware of". For example: Nowadays, many managers are ignorant of current political developments.

Either explanation for "Ig" is reasonable and can be used. And both "Ignoble Nobel" and "Ignorant Nobel" pop out when you search the Internet. In either case, "Ig Nobel" is a pun, a play on words.

That's why this title sounds subtle even to native speakers. But, it poses a challenge for a translator. "最無聊滑稽諾貝爾獎" can be a proper translation since it grasps the silliness of the prize. Or we can put it as "搞笑版之諾貝爾獎".

    上面這一大段重點就兩個字跟最後一段:

    兩個字

    ignoble

    ignorant

    最後一段:

    這是為什麼這個頭銜即使對這些以英語為母語的人一樣令人覺得巧妙, 它(指Ig)對譯者(或釋字的人)來說的確是個難題....以下恕略@@
