People at a Chinese wedding banquet are served shark fin soup. Little do they realize that they are destroying the marine ecosystems of Australia and Indonesia.
Scientists report near extinction among some species of sharks, especially those which keep coral reef ecosystems free from overpopulation and diseased fish. These sharks, not considered man-eaters, are being over-fished. Researchers note that a huge increase in demand from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore for shark fins─the “limbs” of the shark that move it through water─is responsible for the loss of some shark species in seas around Southeast Asia and Australia. Though not a popular marine species, sharks play a vital role in maintaining the health of their ecosystems.
Planning a wedding? Skip the shard fin soup and substitute another popular Chinese dish. You will be doing nature a big favor.
