Time to root out election irregularities
Investigations made by law-enforcement authorities over the past few weeks have turned up evidence showing many attempts by candidates to bribe prospective voters.
Democratization has made Taiwan a more open, active and energetic society. The existence of a democratic system here gives Taiwan an advantage over the Chinese mainland, which, though successful economically, remains an authoritarian society where freedom is limited for groups and individuals.
The democratic system, ideally, is a driving force behind the movement to increase government efficiency and social progress. But a successful democratic system depends on fair and open elections held without irregularities.
There is on this island a very strict law concerning campaign practices. And the authorities are certainly diligent in enforcing the law. Why then is election-related lawbreaking still so widespread?
The main reason is that most people in this country still lack a clear concept of what democracy means. Another reason is that candidates and their campaign aides are too self-seeking and too anxious to win.
Our schools should do more to educate students on what democracy is all about. And law-makers should pass laws that provide heavier penalties for unlawful electioneering.
