We have known for a long time that women are pressured by images in advertising and media. We see hundreds of ads every day. In our lives, we spend three years just watching television commercials, according to Dr. Jean Kilbourne. Although people claim to be unaffected by it, she says that advertising affects all of us subconsciously.

Women frequently compare their bodies to others, and researchers have found that continually seeing beautiful bodies can decrease a woman’s body image. In one study, some women were shown pictures of thin models. In a body image survey, the “thin model” group said the models made them feel insecure about their own attractiveness.

Lately, we have learned that men are also affected by advertisements. In one study, one group of men watched a television show and saw ads featuring sexy male models without shirts. Another group of men saw ads with men in business suits. The “shirtless male model” group felt depressed and less satisfied with their own muscles and body image.

Women and men are both victims of the pressure they feel form advertisements. When companies begin to advertise products with realistic models, people will feel more secure with their own bodies.
