A1. Because it's for the first time that she meet someone really understand her and willing to talk to her. "It was a time of quiet and of waiting.", meaning that she's always been waiting for the time or the right person to get to know her talents. She doesn't want to be a traditional woman at all.
A2. Elisa is a woman waiting to be understood because she doesn't want to be a traditional one.
A3. Because it's for the first time that someone talks about the chrysanthemums with her, and the man seems to understand pretty much. She's happy that she finally find someone that listens to her. In the war years, women's voiced couldn't be heard. So the chrysnathemums are a representative of women's feelings waiting to be heard.
