Julia and Brian have been married for three years. They didn’t meet through friends or at work. They met through an online

dating agency. Two years ago, Julia and Brian were single and unhappy in New York. They didn’t have time to meet a partner because they worked such long hours. When Brian signed up with an online dating agency in September 1999, he saw Julia’s photograph and sent her an e-mail. They fell in love after a few dates and got married just five months later.

Internet dating has boomed in the last few years. In just one month in 2001,

5.8 million Americans visited dating sites. One international dating site, Match.com, has brought together thousands of couples, resulting in 1,400 marriages. When single people visit the Match.com website, they choose the type of person they want to meet. Then a computer matches them to a suitable person. Once the computer has matched them, they can meet for a date. If they live far away from each other, they can communicate using chat programs such as ICQ or Yahoo Messenger.

Having a relationship with a person you have never met can have problems. It is not easy to know if the person you are chatting with is telling the truth. Julia’s friend Susan had an online relationship with a man in France. “He seemed very nice,” Susan says. “He told me he was twenty-eight, successful and rich.” But when Susan flew to Prance to meet him, she was disappointed.

“He wa forty-seven, unemployed and already married!” I

But if you are careful, you might be lucky like Julia and Brian!
