When he was a fledgling lawyer getting started in New York.

Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), thirty-first president of the United States,

was hired to handle a difficult civil case.

The opposing lawyer, an older man and more experienced in

the ways of the courtroom, was a very cunning fellow, as well as an accomplished speaker,

especially when pleading his case before the jury.

He maligned the defendant with innuendos, flattered the members of the jury,

and overwhelmed the entire court with his detailed knowledge of the law.

The man made one grave error, however; he jabbered on for nearly two hours.

Roosevelt noticed that after a while the members of the jury became restless and

stopped paying attention. After so much talk by the bombastic attorney,

the jurors were practically in a daze.

When his turn came to speak, the younger lawyer stood up and, facing the jury, said,

\"Gentlemen, you have heard the evidence.

You have also heard my distinguished colleague, a brilliant orator.

If you believe him instead of the evidence, you must, of course, decide in his favor. That is all I have to say.\"

Fifteen minutes after the jury went out it returned with a verdict of \"not guilty,\"

and Roosevelt\'s client was immediately acquitted.

When he was a fledgling lawyer getting started in New York.

    fledgling ==> 初出茅廬的年輕人, 年輕無經驗的人

    When he was a fledgling lawyer getting started in New York. 他一開始在紐約還是一個年輕無經驗的或是初出茅廬的年輕人時 ....可以這樣翻第一句.

    其實你也理解的很好ㄚ

    大意喔....我想一下.....應該可以這樣說....

    In his early days as a lawyer. Franklin D. Roosevelt out wisdomed a more experienced and cunning opponent in one difficult civil case.

    In that case he wrapped up the trial with a clean and short yet powerful speech. Not only did he won that case but also set a standard of attitude and wisdom towards his later career.

    中文翻譯大概是(我大概翻...因為你也應該可以自己翻的很漂亮):

    Franklin D. Roosevelt 還在當律師時,在處理一樁困難的民事案件 他擊敗了 一個更有經驗和富有謀略的對手.

    在那樁案子裡她做了個簡潔有力的收尾.不單贏了那場勝利更奠定下他日後處事態度和智慧

    智慧可以有更好的用詞 但是想不到 你可以想想吧^_^
