語意上"the century"就是指前面的"the seventeenth century"沒錯，可是在句法上，"The seventeenth century was the century"是S+Be+SC(主詞補語)的結構，而"in which"所引導的關係子句先行詞是"the century"。所以並沒有你所談到的問題。語意是語意，句法是句法，這是要分開的概念。

應該要用in which才對,因為在關係子句裡, 關代that的前面是不能有介係詞的; 而關代which則是沒有這種限制的,這在文法在關係子句中是很重要的
