Culture Shock

This was the second time I went abroad, but it was the first time to leave my country by myself so long. I went to New Zealand a whole month, and I was studying English there. Maybe I didn’t improve my English very much. Nevertheless, I learned many cultures in New Zealand. Now, I am going to introduce the original people of New Zealand. We call them Maori people.

Enter the Maori drop, we can hear the passionate voice “Kia ora.”It means hello. Then they will touch both noses to greet each other. Their ancestors were Polynesian who came from south-east Asia. They are the first discovered Aotearoa which they called New Zealand. In Maori language, it means “The Land of the Long White Cloud.”They are just like Taiwanese aboriginal people. Both of them are Negroid. You can see that Maori have tattoo on their face. It means that those people are estimable. On the other hand, women are only tattooed on their chin. Many years ago, they stuck out their tongue to frighten enemy. Actually, they dance and do that action to welcome tourists.

They have some special arts and crafts. Wood, bone and greenstone carving are very important for them. Furthermore, lizards are the only animals represented on Maori carving. It is because that Maori people are revered them. Besides, the other crafts are Maori weaving. They used the New Zealand flax to weave baskets, floor mats, skirts and cloaks. Also, one of the most important vehicles is canoe. They trust that their ancestors were sailing across the Pacific Ocean by canoes. The Maori canoe is carved and large. I have heard that a large canoe can take about one hundred people.

From this experience, I learned many differente folkways and cultures. Sometimes I felt homesick and unwonted at the learning process. Nevertheless, I deep realize kiwis life-style. Their eating preferences, language and arts etc. are all insteresting for me. I think it was a very precious experience for me.
