Taiwan is an island country located to the west of North Pacific where she suffered from typhoon frequently. Typhoon has been one of the most serious calamities to this island. For the research of wind science in Taiwan some of the methodology and specifications adopted from the United States and Japan have been employed. However, there are still plenty of such specifications need to be revised to fit local circumstance; Especially, there is limited studies focus on the effects on building structures caused by strong winds accompanied with heavy rain. Therefore, this study describes the revisions of design criteria used for building structures against wind force and the affects on the structures under attack of both wind and rain simultaneously. For wind speed, the air density may be derived from the concept of precipitation so that the coefficient of wind pressure may be adjusted and then wind speed be obtained. As for the rainfall, the field data collected from the distrometers can be used for calculating the equivalent precipitation rate in a unit volume and further the size of rainfall be calculated. At the end of this study, some sample analyses and comparisons have been done in respective conditions simulating structures subject to attack by both wind force and rainfall as well as by only the wind force. The results will serve as the reference for further study on the analysis of building structures affected by both wind and rain.
