The international migrants are playing an increasingly important role in globalization as the world enters the twenty-first century. In this paper we will discuss the costs and benefits of this new wave of migration.

Theories of migration traditionally distinguish between push factors and pull factors. In the case of economic migration (usually labour migration), differentials in wage rates are prominent. Poor individuals from less developed countries can have far higher standards of living in developed countries, than in their originating countries. Escape from poverty is a traditional push factor, the availability of jobs is the related pull factor. The migrants may plan to send remittances to their family, it may help to significantly reduce poverty and equalize incomes.

According to the Report of the Yale Global, most international migrants are in the high-income developed countries. There are many factors of migration. Firstly, for some migrants, education is the primary pull factor. As far as developing countries are concerned, is its “brain drain”. They able to find work in the developed world are those who are well educated. The reason for “brain drain” is that the primary labor market has relatively highly skilled and well paid. For example, official statistics suggest that 228, 000 Poles have registered to live and work in Britain since Poland joined the EU in May 2004.

Second, some migration is for personal reasons, based on a relationship. In a few cases, an individual may wish to immigrate to a new country, in a form of transferred patriotism.

In conclusion, reports the World Bank, that developed and developing nations improve their cooperation on the issue. Neither group can hope to stop international migration, but, if they play their cards right, both can hope to benefit from it.
