The first tea bags, developed in the United States in the early 1900s, were riffs on the small silk pouches that tea merchants used to provide samples for customers. The silk was eventually replaced by muslin shortly before World WarⅠ. An automatic tea-bagging machine was produced in the early 1920s, and in 1930 the first perforated parchment paper teabags came on the market, outshining the competition in that the material had no taste of its own, leaving the tea inside unimpaired.

In 1949, Adolf Rambold, an engineer at tea bag machine company Teekanne and former part-owner of the tea bag company Teepak, invented the double-chambered tea-bag-making machine, which led to the patent of the double-chambered tea bag at the end of the year. The bag, made from utterly taste-free filter paper, contained tea in two separate chambers, which allowed water to circulate freely around the individual tea leaves, allowing their flavor to develop more fully than when the leaves were all packed together into one bag. No adhesives were used, either, as the bag was manufactured using a series of special and complex folds, which further retained the taste-free purity of the bags.

Since 1949 most tea bags (90 percent in the United States and almost 100 percent in Europe) have been double chambered, and the mass production of the bags allowed by Rambold’s machines changed tea drinking from a luxury saved for few to a drink enjoyed by everyone. Currently, 60 percent of tea produced all over the world is destined for tea bags.
