Explorers found something strange in the New World. Indian children had balls

that bounced. The explorers brought the material to England. Scientists worked

with it. One gave it a name. He rubbed a piece of it over pencil marks. The marks

rubbed off. He called the piece rubber. Rubber also kept out water. Scientists melted

the raw rubber. They saw how to make raincoats. But there were drawbacks. The

coats were sticky in hot weather. Cold made them stiff and brittle.

  Could the problem be solved? Yes, Charles Goodyear solved it. He was a poor

inventor. He worked in his wife’s kitchen. She wanted him to find a paying job. But

he kept on trying. One day he had an accident. He spilled a sulfur-rubber mixture

on a hot stove. The sulfur smelled awful. His wife was angry. He was upset. Then he

noticed something. The mixture baked like a pancake. He thought, “Why didn’t it

melt further?” He carefully lifted the pancake of rubber. It had changed. Now it was

soft. It bent easily. He put it on ice. It did not stiffen. He held it over heat. It did not

become sticky. The problem was soled. The rubber was “cured.” It stayed tough and

firm. Goodyear named the process after Vulcan. He was the Roman god of fire.

  Goodyear licensed his process. But he was no businessman. He gained very

little. Lawsuits ate up his money. Not much more is known. But there is a bright spot.

Something must have worked. His second son graduated from Yale. He was a

well-known historian. Another son also did well. He adapted the sewing machine. It now made shoes.

Yes, there was sulfur in the rubber. But there must have been brains in the genes.

    這神奇的材料,塑膠,還可以防止水的滲透。科學家們把塑膠融解之後,便悟到了雨衣的製作方法。不過這種塑膠雨衣也有缺點。天氣熱的時候雨衣會變的黏膩,天氣冷了又會變的僵硬易碎。

    到底這個缺點有沒有辦法被克服呢?有的,而且一個叫查理‧固特異的人就給它辦到了!他一開始是個生活貧困的發明家,窮到只能窩在老婆的廚房裡思索新的構想。他老婆一心紙想要固特異找個工作領份穩定的薪水養家活口,可固特異就是不肯,仍不斷的嘗試著,想出克服塑膠缺點的方法。

    一天,意外降臨在固特異身上。他打翻了一鍋熱爐子,裡頭還有塑膠和硫磺的混合物。硫磺刺鼻的味道令人作嘔,搞得固特異太太也生氣了,固特異也覺得懊惱了。可就在這時他注意到,打翻的混合物竟然烤熟凝固了,就像薄煎餅一樣。他想:為什麼塑膠沒有繼續維持融化的狀態呢?他小心翼翼的掀起那層烤的像煎餅一般的塑膠。塑膠竟然改變了!變得柔軟而可以彎曲了!

    固特異把這變質的塑膠擺在冰塊上,塑膠也不再變的僵硬易碎。再把它拿去加熱,也不會變的黏膩沾手,原本困擾的問題被解決了,塑膠的缺點也被治癒了,它是堅固又結實的!固特異把他發現的神奇的塑膠處理方法取名為Vulcan,取自羅馬神話中火神的名字。  

    固特異替他的發明申請了專利,可是他並不是一個精明的生意人,惱人的法律官司耗盡了他的財富,能給累積下來的可說是很少。有關他生平的其餘事蹟被人所知的也不多。不過仍有一點令人欣慰,也顯示出固特異本人的能力不凡:他的二兒子從耶魯大學畢業,成為了一個有名的歷史學家;另外一個兒子也大有成就:他改造了原有的縫紉機,發明了可製造鞋子的機器。

    的確,塑膠中是意外被添加了硫磺。可他腦子裡的聰明才智可是與生具來而傳承不息的啊!
