Robots are replacing workers on more and more assembly lines. Not only can these robots do simple tasks, but some of them can be programmed for complex operations. Entire factories may be run with only a few human supervisors to monitor the robots.

If the robot revolution takes hold, it will have important effects on our economy. For years, assembly lines have provided fairly well-paid jobs for people without a high level of education or special skills. Thousands of men and women have spent their entire working lives on assembly lines.

Assembly line workers who are replaced by robots may have trouble finding other work. The jobs available today are mostly in service industries. High-level service jobs, such as consulting or computer programming, require a high level of education. Low-level service jabs, such as secretarial work or keyboarding, generally pay far less than manufacturing. Also, the work is often in places far from the industrial towns where the replaced workers line. There may be some hard times ahead for these people

For the next generation, robots could be a good thing. They eliminate tedious work that can make a person feel almost like a robot. Perhaps jobs of the future will be more interesting. Also, the costs of some products made by robots may decrease.

For the present, however, robots may save factories money, but workers will probably pay the price
