Corporate style

While modernism had been the prerogative of a small number of intellectual enthusiasts in the 1920 s and 1930 s .its progressive designs became the acceptable face of modern architecture in the years following world war II. Corporate architecture, which by its very nature has to convey a sense of permanence and authority , welcomed the ‘glass and steel’ style with its potential for open-plan space and good lighting. Ironically, it proved to be capitalism that provided Modernism with one of its most successful formulae. Companies more often than not commissioned the style with an eye to prestige and individuality, but quite often ended up with largely anonymous buildings as the number of office buildings in the same style spiraled.

In the united states, the architectural firm of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill designed Lever House on New York’s Park Avenue(1952). It used the device of a podium, as the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society had done before it, in order to visually link the verticality of the building to the horizontal lines of the ground.

Sheathed in reflective blue-green tinted glass, the effect of weightlessness and dematerialization is further enhanced by the absence of strong structural elements-horizontal and vertical elements are merely implied by thin banding.
