Despite the doomsayers when times arc bad (and the doomsayer when times are good), now that I’ve lived through several up/d cycles, I’m certain the music business is a long-term major industry. will go through changes—as I’m sure you know, the Internet shaken things up to a fare-there-well—but the bottom line is that records (whether sold as CDs or a series of squeaks over some wire or satellite) are one of the cheapest forms of permanent entertainment you can buy. Music is one of the few things that enhances other activities (as opposed to a motion picture, video game, or a book, for example pie, which require your total concentration), and the power of music to vividly conjure feelings is staggering. (I still can’t listen to Johnny Mathis’s Greatest Hits without thinking of slow [and close] dancing ii. a teenager. Am I dating myself)
What’s Your Clout?
And now, back to earth.
To discuss the range of real numbers, we have to know how strong your our bargaining power is. Broadly, I’ll divide it into three categories
New Artist. This is someone who has never before had a record de4 nr someone who has been signed but never sold over 250,000 or so albums per release. It can also mean an artist who was once successful but lost his or her following and is having difficulty finding a record deal (or, as one of my clients lovingly put it, someone who has “crashed and burned”).
Midlevel Artist or New Artist with a Bidding War. Either (1)
an artist whose last album sold in the 500,000 to 1,000,000 range; or (2) a new artist being chased by a lot of labels. When a number of companies are chasing an unsigned artist, it’s not uncommon for the deal to look like a midlevel deal, and on occasion even higher. I’m aware of one situation where an unsigned artist was offered over S1 ,000,000 for two albums. (Just so you don’t get too jealous, that artist’s records have only had mediocre success.)
