Job satisfaction. The job satisfaction scale was taken from the OIs‘How you feel about your job’ scale. Participants were asked to respond by

circling the number on a 22-item, six-point scale(very much satisfactin

–very much dissatisfaction) that corresponded closest to their job

satisfaction. The measure comprised six sub-scales: ‘Satisfaction with

achievement, value and growth; ‘Satisfaction with the job itself’;

Satisfaction with organizational design and structure; ‘Satisfaction with

organisational processes; ‘Satisfaction with personal relationships;

and ‘Broad view of job satisfaction’(the sum of one item from each


Levels of clinically relevant depression and anxiety were measured

using the HADS. This suggested two possible cut-off scores. Using the

conservative cut-off score of 11, 14 per cent of the population

evidenced clinical levels of anxiety and 10 per cent evidenced similar

levels of depression. Using the less conservative cut-off score of 8, the

respective percentages were 37 and 19 per cent. These levels of

depression and anxiety are comparable or less than those found in

larger studies1;9 and suggest that any biases in response to the

questionnaire did not result in significant distortions in the levels of

stress reported by respondents.
