Jason’s kind of play came to be called a comedy of Manners. It is a satirical picture of contemporary life; realistically painted, it depicts human follies, not crimes. No melodrama here, or make-believe, or improbability of any sort. Jason didn’t intend to charm or delight or comfort his audience; he wanted to awaken them. He knew that the hand of the public could be a heavy hand on the shoulder of an artist and he urged his fellow writers to preserve their independence and integrity.

His position in the history of drama is therefore most important: he was a critic who insisted on the seriousness of art and an artist who set the very highest standards of excellence for the later theatre of realism.
