The FTIR spectra of the HDPE composites thermally treated at 60 °C, 90 °C and 110 °C were obtained and the curves of carbonyl index versus time were plotted. At 60 °C, there is no obvious change in HDPE composites after about 600 h of thermal oxidation. At 90 °C (see Fig. 1), carbonyl indices in HDPE and STC filled HDPE increase dramatically after different induction periods—86 h for HDPE and 131 h for HDPE/STC. Although the induction time of HDPE is shorter, the carbonyl index of HDPE/STC grows more steeply. The oxidation degree exceeds that of HDPE after 176 h and the film broke into pieces after 314 h. The sharp decrease of carbonyl index of HDPE after 330 h may be due to the loss of highly oxidized fragments. The oxidation of polyethylene molecules may cause the chain scission. Therefore, small molecules or fragments form and their drop result in the decrease of the carbonyl index. After that, the remaining part of HDPE goes on oxidation. So the carbonyl index increases again. For other HDPE composites, the carbonyl indices increase with time rather slowly
