# Apothecary Units

Chances are that the bottle of aspirin in your medicine cabinet gives the mass of each tablet in the unit grains (gr) ,where 1 gr =64.8 mg. Known as an apothecary unit, the grain is part of an early system of measurement that was once used by all physicians and pharmacists. the system includes our customary gallons, quarts, and pints, plus some less familiar units that are still used in specialized applications.

The basis for liquid measurement in the apothecary system is the minim, a unit orginally equal to the volume of one drop of water but now defined as 0.062ml. Sixty minims exactly equal one fluidram(roighly one teaspoonfui) , and one fluid ounce exactly equais eight fluidrams. The fluidram is still occasionally used for fluid volume in medications and expensive perfumes.
