Celebration for a newborn baby varies from place to place because Chinese spread everywhere in the world as a large ethnic group. Traditionally, people in southeast China and Taiwan celebrate the birth of a baby after one month; also know as “Month Celebration”. Generally, parents worship ancestors with cooked sticky rice and chicken soup seasoned with sesame oil and rice wine that will be shared later with their relatives and friends. Some even throw a party to celebrate.
Meanwhile, the baby will have his/her very first haircut representing a brand new start of a life. The cut hair may be used as a material to make a Chinese writing brush that they baby may keep for the rest of his/her life as a souvenir. The brush also serves as a token of literacy and intelligence of the baby.
Upon the first anniversary of the birth or the first birthday, the baby’s maternal grandmother is supposed to worship ancestors with sacrifice and turtle-shaped red bum that will be given to the baby later as a gift. In addition, twelve different toys or objects (such as abacus, pen, book, and toy car…etc.) will be scattered around the baby. People believe that from the first object picked by the baby, one can predict the baby’s aptitude and possible career. For example, those who pick up abacus will be deemed as businesspersons-to-be while those who pick up a book may be a teacher in the future. Parents may decide the way they raise the child accordingly.
