Sport has also provided a platform through which different cultures can become more similar. Much of the world shares in the excitement of popular sporting events. For the first time ever, the World Cup of Football was held in the United States in 1994.

A record 3 billion viewers watched these games take place in front of sellout crowds. This is incredible given the fact that football had only a minimal presence in the United States 30 years ago. The 2002 World Cup of Football played a key role in overcoming cultural barriers when two such different nations as Japan and Korea decided to co-host the event.
