    Critical Period Hypothesis: 語言學習關鍵期假說

The 'Critical Period Hypothesis' was introduced by linguist Eric Lennebergin the 1967. The 'critical period' refers to the crucial period of language acquisition, which Lennebergin claimed to end around the age of 12.

    根據這項理論,孩子一旦過了某一特定年齡,某些學習能力會降低甚至消失. Lennebergin 認為人的大腦從二歲開始邊化 (lateralisation),在邊化完成前,人是用全腦來學習語言,約在青春期左右,大腦會完成邊化,從此,語言學習主要由左邊大腦負責。人腦「邊化」後的語言學習不如全腦學習時期來得好。因此,語言學習最好在大腦完成邊化之前,這也就是所謂的「語言學習關鍵期」。

Lennebergin also claimed that if one is not exposed to adequate language input or stimuli and and that one does not learn a language before then, s/he will never achieve a full command of language, especially grammatical systems.

One famous example that support this theory is Genie, 'The Wild Child', a victim of lifelong child abuse.

    最有名的例子應是1970年在加州發現的Genie。 Genie十三歲前被父親關在一個小房間裏,除了偶而的斥責聲之外,Genie幾乎沒接觸過人類的語言。十三歲之後,Genie雖接受密集而豐富的語言訓練,仍無法學得完整之語言。這些證據似乎都支持關鍵期的想法。

Noam Chomsky is the creator of the theory of generative grammar, which is often described as 'universal grammar'. Like Eric Lenneberg, Chomsky argued for the hypothesis that children have innate, language-specific abilities that facilitate and constrain language learning.

Chomsky is one of the proponents of the Critical Period Hypothesis.
