明明就是刷全部的牙齒

不只刷一顆阿

    因為 toothbrush 是 adjective adjunct ，裡面的 tooth 是作為修飾名詞 (brush) 的形容詞來使用：

    Brush 名詞

    Tooth 形容詞

    What kind of brush?

    Toothbrush

    因為形容詞不可複數化，所以是 toothbrush 而不是 teethbrush.

    toothbrush 指牙刷，名詞，複數為 toothbrushes.

    雖然是刷全部的牙齒，但是只用【1支牙刷】在刷而已，所以是單數。

    若換成刷牙 brush the teeth 因為牙齒不只一顆所以用teeth.

    It is no reason. They used to use before. The word toothbrush stand for 全體名稱. For instance, I go to school on foot.

    我認為是

    先教小朋友 認識的字tooth

    有些小朋友 可能 不認識 teeth 的字

    所以用 toothbrush 不用teethbrush

    ( 更多人 知道的字 就對啦)

    英文裡有用單數名稱來代表全體名稱

    牙膏也是toothpaste

    因為單數名詞才能借用為形容詞

    就像書店只能說bookstore 不能說 booksstore

    禮品店是giftshop 而非giftsshop

    (書店裡賣的書也不只一本 禮品店裡東西也很多不是嗎?)
