Q: What are the four competence included in linguistic competence?
A: In general terms, linguistic competence is defined as a one's ability to speak and understand language in a grammatically-correct manner (Ottenheimer 2006: 95). It is the use of grammatical rules of a language, as opposed to "communicative competence", which is the use of social language rules.
In answer to your question, the competences that make up linguistic competence depend on what school of thought you follow. Because you specified only four competences, those competences would normally be referring to "listening", "speaking", "reading", and "writing".
However, listening, speaking, reading, and writing are in truth more "language skills" (語言能力). A more comprehensive method of distiction would be to include six competences:
1. lexical competence (辭彙);
2. grammatical competence (文法);
3. semantic competence (語意);
4. phonological competence (語音);
5. Orthographic competence (正字);
6. Orthoepic competence (正音).
Together, these six competences describe a language as a formal system.

Is this a question you have yourself? Or is it a question from a text book? The reason I'm asking is that I'd like to know where the reference to "four competences" comes from. If you're able to clarify, I might be of further assistance.
