    Glacier Recession

Glaciers are extremely sensitive indicators of climatic changes. If the rate of nourishment by snowfall is sharply increased, the ice of the upper end of the glacier thickens and consequently flows more rapidly downgrade. Instead, if the rate of glacier nourishment decreases, the thinning glacier will flow less rapidly and will not be brought to the terminus so rapidly. Its surface will melt away rapidly, causing the terminus to be retreated upvalley. This phenomenon is called glacier recession. And this is the case at the time being as discovered by the scientists.

The reason of ice melting is attributed to the global warming effect. And the world-wide temperature increase and ice sheet retreat are caused by the increase in the carbon dioxide content of the atmosphere. Along with water vapor, carbon dioxide is an important gas in causing the greenhouse effect, in which earth radiation is absorbed in the lower atmosphere (Ozone layer)and the average air temperature is thereby considerably increased over what it would be without these gases. The increasing temperature is high enough to bring on the melt of ice sheets. The rapid disappearance of forest cover and the burn of fossil fuels, e.g., gasoline and coal, might release too much carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

If the scenario of a generally continuing increase in world-wide temperatures is indeed correct, we can anticipate a period of deglaciation, with the ice sheets slowing melting. Such a situation would cause a global sea-level rise that would inundate many islands and coastal plains of the world, including Taiwan.
