This interior view of the heart shows its four chambers, valves, and septa.

The right side of the heart receives blood from the systemic circulation and pumps it into the pulmonary circulation.

The left side of the heart receives blood returning from the pulmonary circulation and pumps it into the systemic circulation.

The work of the left ventricle is significantly greater than that of the right

ventricle, and its walls are correspondingly much thicker.

VI. Electrical activity of the heart (Figure 4.5)

The normal pumping of blood through the chambers of the heart requires the precisely timed spread of action potentials through the heart’s conduction system and the atrial and ventricular muscle.

The rate of the heartbeat is set by spontaneously generated action potentials in the cells of the SA node.

The frequency of SA node action potentials is regulated by the autonomic

nervous system.

Sympathetic stimulation of the SA node increases if (principally Na+ current) and iCa2+, which depolarizes the cell, and thereby increases the heart rate.

The ventricular muscle action potential has a prolonged depolarization phase resulting from Ca2+ influx.

This long plateau phase prevents tetany of cardiac muscle at very high heart rates.
