This tension between the images of the hunter as a park ranger

and the hunter as a beast of prey is a corollaryof the way we

define hunting , as something that occurs on the boundary between the human domain and wild .

Throughot Western history , from the myths of Artemis

and Dionysus down to our own stories of mythic hunters like

Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett , the hunter has been seen

as a liminal and ambiguous figure , now a fighter against

wilderness and now a half-animal participant in it , who stands

with one food on eithrr side of the boundary and swears no

perpetual allegiance to either side.

Perhaps the reason that hunting plays such a large part in Greek

myth 一and in our own stories about human origins一is that it

takes place on that boundary , and thus marks the edge of the

human world.

This tension between the images of the hunter as a park ranger

and the hunter as a beast of prey is a corollary of the way we

define hunting , as something that occurs on the boundary between the human domain and wild .

Throughout Western history , from the myths of Artemis

and Dionysus down to our own stories of mythic hunters like

Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett , the hunter has been seen

as a liminal and ambiguous figure , now a fighter against

wilderness and now a half-animal participant in it , who stands

with one foot on either side of the boundary and swears no

perpetual allegiance to either side.

Perhaps the reason that hunting plays such a large part in Greek

myth 一and in our own stories about human origins一is that it

takes place on that boundary , and thus marks the edge of the

human world.
