Fiona Doyie’s biography of the woman who raised her,her grandmother Jean George Awumpun form Cape York, is apowerful social and political account of ndigenous life and those involved with the wik decision.Awumpun is a proud Alngith Elder, fluent in Aingithand Liningithi dialects, with a strong knowledge of the Dreaming totemic ancestry and practices of the Alngith, a knowiedge which is sadly diminishing in younger generations. Yet events in her childhood forces Awumpun to move away from her roots, resulting in ‘whispers‘ about her identity and a refusal by both the government and by her own people to accept her rights to claim identitly and land.

Through Awnmpnu’s recollections we gain insight into the Cape York culture and people, mission life at Weipa, the culture etiquette and laws of the area, the hospital at Thursday Island. We are also introduced to members of her family, inciuding poet and dancer, the author, Fiona Doyle.
Doyle’s book, whilst powerful, is a beautifully personal and emotive account of this woman’s struggle for recognition and justice within her country and amongat her own people. It is a heartfelt plea for recognition, yet on time does it point the finger or berate. It simply tells Awumpun’s story, ciearly, plainly and with the iove of agrand-daughter.
Whispers of This Wik Woman is a wonderful text through which to examine the genre of biographicl writing.
