片語”back up”和”tough out”的用法?

1.Sewers can "back up" and water gets contaminated when a hurricane comes.

2.When a hurricane comes, roads get flooded and highways get "backed up".

3.A:"We lost our house to a hurricane back when I was first married."

B:"So you might tough it out this time."

請問句中的"back up" 和"tough out"分別是什麼意思?

B:So you might tough it out this time.

B:I see your son is loading woods on top of the car.Is that to protect the windows?

A:Yes,just in case.Seems he got the last six pieces in the store.Um, everybody's doing the same thing, I guess.

    1. Sewers can "back up" and water gets contaminated when a hurricane comes.

    2. When a hurricane comes, roads get flooded and highways get "backed up".

    3. A: "We lost our house to a hurricane back when I was first married."

B: "So you might tough it out this time."

The eye of the storm".

    To: 薯風Anna

    Elisa

Elisa, am I right? Please say something!!

#2 小頹 is right on "tough it out"

    See http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/tough

    17. tough it out, Informal. to endure or resist hardship or adversity.

I live in the US for over 18 years and I always use this online dictionary to look up for meanings. You can find virtually any word.

    Hi, 暮風/Anne

I usually don't go back and check where I left my comments. The reason that I checked back on this was my curious as to what the outcome is. I am only saying that what I know of the right answer should be. It is your choice to take my comment or leave it.

    - to be continued -

I did not ask that you should vote for #2 and I left my comment before the vote even began. The system is not perfect. And if you believe who you believe has the right answer, then vote for that. Just to be clear. I did not 發動投票部隊專投那一個.

    - to be continued -

You live in a democratic country and you do have the right to vote for anyone you like. You don't have to agree with every word I say or even the dictionary suggested. I have seen River's response to other questions and he is pretty good too.

    - to be continued -

And I have left my comments in the past too, indicating that he has the right answer. But this is one that I disagreed with him. I left comments quite a lot and truly it is not my business to stick my nose into other people's business. Everyone has the choice to take it or leave it.

Finally, just want to say that I am not the only one who left comments before the vote even began indicating which one has the right answer. I am sorry that it is against my nature not to speak up what I believe to be the truth.

But anyway, my truth may not be your truth. This may become a "he says, she says" if we throw away the dictionary and keep arguing about this. Just do it whatever you like and use your own judgments. It is truly not my business.

I cannot care about everything that happened in Yahoo Q&A. I have my own life.

This will be my last say about this question. I do not have time for this. Sorry if you have any more comments, I won't be able to respond to you.

By the way, I wanted to clarify that I do not have a network to 發動投票部隊專投那一個 (I am too new to build that), and I don't believe River did that either. We are just here to provide help with the same intention. About the voting system, I believe River agreed with me. see his question.

Oh, about your statement: Yes, but it needs to be within that 伸縮空間. However, if it is an idiom, it has a certain meaning already. Anyway, I am saying too much. River, please don't get offended by all my comments. I don't doubt your English ability.

I am sorry for being emotional. I am sorry that I am not a saint. I am sorry to be a human being, and to have emotion when I am being falsely accused. Wouldn't you? I am sorry to be the focal point as people kept bringing the focus back to me.

"BACK UP" 跟 "TOUGH IT OUT" 皆是慣用語(IDIOM),所以在字典裡比較難查到。

    TOUGH IT OUT ─ 堅強的面臨困境

    --

1.Sewers can "back up" and water gets contaminated when a hurricane comes.

2.When a hurricane comes, roads get flooded and highways get "backed up".

3.A:"We lost our house to a hurricane back when I was first married."

B:"So you might tough it out this time."

    TOUGH IT OUT 是一個慣用語

ie. - to increase the strength of something.

    但沒找到 tough it out 的其他意思
