Fast food makes you fat, or so common wisdom tells us. More and more nutritionists are discovering that high calories fast food leads to obesity. This, in turn, causes many health problems such as heart disease and high blood pressure. A meal at McDonald's consisting of a Big Mac, large fries, and 16 oz. soda can contain as much as 1,166 calories. The recommended daily amount is 2,000-2,700 for a healthy adult. This small meal will put you well over half your daily amount. It's unlikely as well that this small meal will keep you full for the whole day. Most people will still eat two or three more times after despite having eaten over half their daily limit of calories. Having just one fast-food meal in a day makes it likely that you'll eat away too many calories in that day. Furthermore, this meal contains 51 grams of fat, whereas you are recommended to eat only 50-80 grams of fat per day.
Some researchers suggest that it is possible to include fast food in a healthy diet if you eat it in moderation. But a University of Minnesota study shows in a survey of 5,000 teenagers that most kids actually overeat fast food. The study shows that one-quarter eat fast food 3-4 times a week while half eat fast food 1-2 times per week. Kids who make fast food a regular part of their diet consume more calories and fat. This promotoes weight gain and might lead to being overweight. This is especially worrisome for adolescents because when a fast food habit starts at an early age, it is hard to kick later in life.

Smoking is now identified as a major cause of heart disease, stroke, several different forms of cancer, and a wide variety of other health problems. The vast majority of deaths caused by smoking occur through development of heart disease and lung cancer, followed by chronic bronchitis, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and other circulatory diseases, and cancers other than lung. Around one-third of all cancer deaths in Australia can be attributed to smoking. Cancers were the leading cause of death in Australian men and women in 1993, representing 26.9% of all deaths. Ischaemic heart disease accounted for 24.5% of all deaths, and cerebrovascular disease (stroke) accounted for a further 10% of deaths.
Globally, tobacco is a major cause of death. According to recent estimates, in developed countries alone, tobacco was responsible for 1.7 million deaths in 1985, and will cause a projected 2.1 million deaths in 1995. For the decade 1990-1999, 21 million deaths will be caused in developed countries; more than half of these deaths will be among those aged between 35 and 69, making tobacco the largest single cause of premature death in these countries. There is wider uncertainty about the numbers of deaths caused by smoking in less developed countries, but it will probably be in the vicinity of around one million deaths per year in 1995, making a global total of tobacco deaths of around three million for that year. In many less developed countries the smoking epidemic is only just emerging, and current high smoking rates point to a heavy burden of death and disease in the coming century. Worldwide annual mortality is estimated to exceed ten million sometime during the 2020s.
