1. The painter < > his eyes on the picture.

(A)laved (B) fixed (c) vexed (D) mixed

2. A< >person won't do anything foolish.

(A) sensible (B) romantic (C) modest (D) loyal

3.I think that she didn't attend the party< >

(A) with care (B) at large (c) on purpose (D) in fact

4. John doesn't want to < >his parent's wishes all the time.

(A) Refer to (B) Defer to (C) deal with (D) get through

5. John is, < >a walking dictionary.

(A) as it were (B) on the other hand (C) according to (D) at once

6. < >the gentleman pulled the boy over in time, the boy might

have been run over.

(A) but for (B) without (C) but that (D) in case

很多美國人都會說 i dont wanna deal with this.

    5. walking dictionary

John is a walking dictionary at once.

John is, at once, a walking dictionary.

    為甚麼用but that呢?

換句話說, the boy might have been run over but( that) the gentleman pulled the boy over in time.

( But that the gentleman pulled the boy over in time, the boy might have been run over.)

    如果用in case(假使)的話,

the boy might have been run over in case the gentleman didnt pull the boy over in time.

( In case that the gentleman didnt pull the boy over in time, the boy might have been run over.)

without 和 but for後面一定要接Ving, 名詞, 或是名詞子句

"Without the gentleman PULLING the boy over in time, the boy might..."

pulling the boy over in time則是用來形容the gentleman的形容詞子句

Without the gentleman who pulled the boy over in time, the boy might...."

    2. A< >person won't do anything foolish.

    (A) sensible (B) romantic (C) modest (D) loyal

    (A) sensible is correct because "sensible" is the opposite of "foolish." "Modest" means "humble," so in this sentence grammatically it is OK but semantically it is not as good as "sensible."

    6. < >the gentleman pulled the boy over in time, the boy might

    have been run over.

    (A) but for (B) without (C) but that (D) in case

If you want to use "without," the sentence should be "Without the gentleman PULLING the boy over in time, the boy might

    have been run over."

    Good luck!
