Forecasting has never been more important—or harder.

Customers are less loyal, and global competition more fierce, making it difficult to predict where sales are going. Adding to the problem: Products, sales and distribution channels all have proliferated, and the life spans of products have gotten shorter.

As a result, some companies are being forced to adopt new ways to improve forecasting and planning. And a common theme links them all: collaboration.

Tomorrow's Forecast

•What's Happening: More companies are improving their supply chains by adopting collaborative forecasting, in which different departments work together on planning. Some companies also integrate operations with suppliers and distributors to share data and so improve forecast accuracy.

•Why It's Better: Forcing groups like sales and production to plan together reduces self-serving forecasts that waste resources. The latter can happen when sales officials, for example, boost expected sales just to be sure there is enough supply. Sharing data with distributors, meanwhile, eliminates guesswork about inventory.

•Fine Tuning: This kind of forecasting can still fall short if certain basics aren't met. Requirements include: getting strong support from senior executives, explaining to different parties how they benefit by cooperating, and setting up related goals, metrics and incentives that serve the whole company, not just a department.

Forecasting has never been more important—or harder.
