Since 1960, the birth rate began to decline to below 4%. It went below 3% in 1967 and followed by 1984 which has less than 2%. It then remained approximate of 1.5% but dropped to 1.2% in 2001. Basically, the mortality rate in Taiwan has been in a downward trend but in a slightly slower pace. Before 1951, the mortality rate was more than 1% but went below 1% after 1949. Since 1970, it dropped and remained approximately 0.5%. In 2001, it increased to 0.6%.
The population age structure of Taiwan has an aging trend. At the end of 2001, population proportion of 0 to 14 year old has fell to 25.8%. Whereas 15-64 year old has gone up to 67.4% and more than 65 year old rose to 6.8%. Of these, the median age is 28.2 years old, 48% for the dependency ratio and the aging index rose to 26.4%.
