Finally we could announce some good news to the whole World, after all these years. We had finally beat the virus and freed the Human Race of its worst plague. (João A., The X-38 Virus)

With this invention, the bizarre group of Lisbon scientists changed the world, creating a way to make good use of the excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thus saving the world from the greenhouse effect. (João, The Invention)

However, in a significant number of stories (13 texts; 31.7%) there is evidence of quite negative conceptions of science. These portray the aims of science as fundamentally individualistic (to obtain money, fame or prestige at any cost) or even destructive (to kill enemies, perform nuclear tests, etc.), raising serious moral and ethical issues and often ending in epidemics, wars, or the extermination of a large part of the population. Some negative ideas about science and technology presented by students concern undesirable, sometimes catastrophic, side effects that result from certain medical treatments or from the activity of ‘madmen’ or unscrupulous researchers craving after knowledge, fame and profit, no matter what it takes. Many of the stories talking about negative effects of science and technology focus on cloning and genetic engineering (seven texts; 17.1%), having been clearly influenced by catastrophic scenarios presented in several films and in articles published in sensationalist magazines.
