At last I found a suitable place in which to live. It was a small plain
upon the side of a hill. The hill rose so steeply from the plain that
nothing could come down upon me from above. The flat ground was
about two hundred yards long and one hundred yards wide. The end nearest to the sea sloped down gently towards the low ground leading to
the shore. The plain was on the side of the hill, which was sheltered from the sun until the evening.
Before I put up my tent I stood with my back to the hillside, facing the sea. I took ten paces forward and made a mark. Then I returned to my former position and took ten steps, first to my left and then to my right. I joined these marks together with some rope to form a half circle. Around the edge of the half circle I placed two rows of strong stakes. They stood five feet out of the ground and had shard points. Then I took the lengths of cable, which I had brought form the ship, and laid them between the rows of stakes. Finally, I cut some smaller stakes and drove them into the ground at an angle, so that they acted as supports for the larger ones. The fence was now so strong that neither man nor animal could get over it or through it. At my back the steep hillside formed a natural defence.
I did not make a doorway in order to get inside the atakes, but used a small ladder to climb over the top of the fence. Once I was inside I lifted the ladder over after me, so that I was completely fenced in and safe. I brought inside all my ammunition, food and stores.
I made a large tent form the canvas sail and placed a smaller tent inside it, so that I would be quite dry however hard it rained. At night I slept most comfortably in a hammock which had once belonged to one of the ship's officers.
Everyday I used too go out with my gun, and I soon discovered that there were goats upon the island. They were very shy and ran swiftly, so that they were difficult to shoot. I noticed that they did not run away so quickly, if they were feeding in the valleys and I was in the rocks above them.
After that I always climbed up the rocks first. The first goat that I shot was a she goat who had a little kid by her side. I carried the little goat home on my shoulders and tried to tame it. I unfortunately it would not eat any of the food that I offered it, and so I had to killit.
The two goates provided me with fresh meat for some days.
