Hunger hormone could hold key to dieting

New research on a hormone that triggers hunger may help explain why it's so difficult for dieters to keep weight off and why many patients who have gastric bypass surgery are successful at losing pounds.

The findings could lead to the development of weight-loss drugs that block this hunger hormone, which is secreted by the stomach and part of the small intestine.

Japanese researchers discovered the hormone, ghrelin (pronounced GREH-lin), in 1999, and last year British scientists showed it triggered appetite in humans, the first known hormone to do this. Experts say ghrelin levels rise shortly before meals and fall shortly after meals, and they theorize that it may trigger the desire to eat.

For a study, reported in today's New England Journal of Medicine, researchers compared the ghrelin levels in blood samples of five patients who had gastric bypass surgery, a procedure that creates a much smaller stomach and rearranges the intestine; 13 obese patients who followed a liquid formula diet of 1,000 calories a day for three months and a maintenance diet for three months; and 10 normal-weight patients. They found that:

New research on a hormone that triggers hunger may help explain why it's so difficult for dieters to keep weight off and why many patients who have gastric bypass surgery are successful at losing pounds.
