but still makes me feel that it is contrived somehow.
No say in the history that is similar to this Chinese idiom?

After all, the Chinese idiom emphasizes the risk of life when serving a King.
Therefore, I prefer using risk or ventures instead of tigers to make the whole meaning more specific about how dangerous to serve a king.
