in itself 的用法

如題,句子如下→

It's a fantastic movie, not the story in itself but ......

為何不能用 "not the story itself" ?

    “in itself”是“光就他而言”的意思,是把這項東西獨立出來強調的用法,句子的文意是,“這部電影很棒,但光就故事而言並不好,而是什麽別的因素使得電影出彩”,若不加“in”則沒有這種強調的感覺。這類句型一定會加 in,不知道算不算片語。

    如果只講 the story itself,則不會是上述這個句型,文意可以很相近,但不會一模一樣,例:

    The movie is fantastic, but the story itself kinda sucks.

    = 電影是很棒,但故事本身不咋地。

    It's a fantastic movie, but the action is way better than the story itself.

    = 電影很棒,不過是動作鏡頭好看而非故事本身。

    It's a fantastic movie; the story itself is nothing to write home about, but the acting is superb.

    = 很棒的電影,雖然故事本身沒什麽特別的地方,但是演員的演技堪稱一流。

    "in itself", also written as "in and of itself" means:

    Intrinsically, considered alone. 本質上

    It's a fantastic movie, not the story in itself.

    => This means: the story in itself is not fantastic.

    => In and of itself, the story is not fantastice.

    那句英文本身怪怪的; 將子比較清楚:

    It's a fantastic movie, not the story of it but ......

    It 開頭指的是這電影, 第二句還是指這電影.

    如果換一段你就可說: "the story itself is not that good..."

    原句的itself代表的是movie,這樣才看得出story和movie的關係。如果寫成the story itself,則itself就成了代表story,全句就看不出story和movie是什麼關係了。
