0. does not initiate touching toy
1. initiates reaching, does not reach behind
2. reaches behind, does not touch toy or return to start
3. touches toy placed 45° behind child’s left side, returns to start
STARTING POSITION
Position the child on the mat in any comfortable sitting position. The position of the arms may vary but the child must be reasonably stable in sitting to attempt this item.

INSTRUCTIONS
Place the toy 45° behind the child’s left side at a distance from the buttocks that equals the length of the child’s open hand (it may be further if this helps to motivate the child, but cannot be any closer). One would expect the child to rotate to the left and touch the toy. However, many children exhibit little or no trunk rotation and still succeed in touching the toy. This is definitely acceptable for this item provided they touch it with the left hand. Older children may simply be asked to turn and touch the toy with their left hand. Typically, it is more difficult with young children. The therapist may try passing the toy along their left side to gain their attention and then stopping at the appropriate position, anticipating that the child will attempt to reach for it. It is important to keep their attention on the toy. For a score of 2, “reaches behind”, the hand must reach beyond the greater trochanter.
