As the 'teaching' is done by questioning, we are not trying to teach facts or information (although these are important steps in any inquiry), but a way of examining knowledge, realizing associations (inferences and similarities) and a method and practice of focused inquiry in community. Thus, fundamentally, what is being 'taught' is a method of creative learning and productive communication, a method of reasoned in quiry and analysis. If we recognize that education of the individual is a life-long process - a constantly required synthetic or constructive activity which proceeds in community- then such a method is essential to continued productive self-development.

The P 4C "teacher" acts as a facilitator or coordinator for the group, teaching the method of inquiry by example - asking the questions. Experience in the active P 4C classroom teaches the teacher that the community of inquiry has a life of its own; the natural logical ability of the students is surprising, and, after teaching the toolkit, the group quickly becomes self-facilitating. The children question one another, returning to each other's statements. The inquiry proceeds, and, as in scientific inquiry, given the tools of analysis, the community refines the questions and comes to agree upon the relevance of other questions and tentative answers. The facilitator becomes almost an observer, sometimes a peace-keeper, and the successful P 4C discussion takes on a life and direction of its own.
