    這題真要詳細講, 內容很多. 簡單說:

    [worth V-ing]: 用主動表被動

[worthy of being p.p.] : 用被動表被動

    例如:

The movie is worth watching. (A)

The movie is worthy of being watched. (B)

    原因? 屬於語言習慣吧. 就跟底下的用法類似:

The house needs fixing. (NOT: ... needs to be fixed)

You are to blame. (NOT: ... to be blamed.)

    而實際上, 多數人用(A).

    另外, 題目的寫法的確是很累贅. 可以這麼寫:

Alone and helpless, the old lady found life not worth living.

(OR: ... found life not worhty of being lived.)

    第二題的寫法也不妥. 答案是[so as to]沒錯, 但是應該這麼寫:

Will you be so kind as to help me with this box?

(OR: Will you be kind enough to help me with this box?)

    [except]: 從一群"同類的項目"中提出一項.

Except a broken chair, the room has no furniture.

    I like fruit, except bananas.

    [except for]: 從"整體(可能包含不同的品項, 或指抽象的概念)"提出一項.

The composition is quite good except for the spelling.

    這篇文章除了拼字(不理想)以外,其他都不錯。

It being a fine day last Sunday, we went mountain climbing.

=Because it was a fine day last Sunday, we went mountain climbing.

    這題是考您: 前後兩個子句的主詞不同, 寫成分詞型態時, 原有的主詞不能省.

    這也是只有在國內考試才會看到的寫法.

    分詞型態的用途很廣而雜, 學生的確不易掌握. 只有多閱讀好文章才能慢慢體會.

We should help her, which is necessary.

    逗號之後的[which]=[we should help her].

    這個題目的寫法犯了前後語意重複的毛病. 這樣寫會比較好:

It is necessary that we help her.

    We should help her.

    She needs our help.

    建議版主, 多接觸真正外國人寫的好文章, 用心去體會文法背後的內含(當然像第一題那種, 只好在看多了之後"背下來").

Interesting questions. There is not only one accurate answer and one way of writing. It depends on the occasion, the mood, your habit and your style.

    Worth vs. worthy

    For example:

The topic is not worthy of the discussion in the classroom.

The topic is not worth the discussion in the classroom.

The topic is not worth discussing in the classroom.

It is not worth discussing the topic in the classroom.

The topic is not worthy of discussing in the classroom.

It is worthy of discussing the topic in the classroom.

The topic is not worth to be discussed in the classroom.

The topic is not worthy to be discussed in the classroom.

The topic is not worthy of being discussed in the classroom

The topic is not worth being discussed in the classroom.

So in your case, not worth living and not worthy of living are both accurate.

    1. Will you be kind _____ help me with this box?

    (2) so as to

=> A rule of thumb: since there are already two verbs “be” and “help”, you would want to add an infinitive, or conjunction, etc.

He is so evil as to plot a murder.

    2. ________ a broken chair, the room has no furniture.

    (1) Except (2) Except for

    Both are right.

    http://www.yourdictionary.com/idioms/except-for

    (A) except for + n. = except + n. = = with the exception of +n. = other than + n.

    除…外

    For example:

Except for a broken chair, the room has no furniture.

    除了一把壞椅子外,這房間沒有家具

= Except a broken chair, the room has no furniture.

** For me, I prefer using “except for”

Except for the cold, I am feeling quite well.

    (B) except for + n. = were it not for +n. 如果不是

    For example:

Except for your timely rescue, I would have died.

    3. ________being a fine day last Sunday, we went mountain climbing.

    (2) It

It was a fine day last Sunday

    We went mountain climbing.

To combine two sentences, we use conjunctions, participles, etc. (連接詞,分詞, etc)

It was a fine day last Sunday, so we went mountain climbing.

It being a fine day last Sunday, we went mountain climbing.

    Hi Elisa,

You got the point right. When we are trying to find out the logic behind words by comparing sentences, we must compare sentences of the same structure.

    2009-09-17 01:01:25 補充:

The book is easy to read (S + be-V + adj + to V)The book is worthy to be read / or to read. They are of the same structure, and that's how we find out the answers. "The book needs cleaning." is not suitable for the discussion here for the difference of structure.

    2009-09-17 01:04:55 補充:

And "worth to be discussed" is incorrect and not accepted by most native speakers. The reason why I mention this is we must focus on good English, or there will be no sentences wrong, resulting in the fact that all English tests become meaningless.

    2009-09-17 01:07:54 補充:

Some of your examples are actually wrong, and I foucs on "The topic is worthy of dicussining " vs "The topic is worthy of be discussed".

When "topic" is the object of discuss, then it should be passive, that is , the latter is correct. This is my point of view.
