A sensitive 11-year-old is punched hard on the upper arm every morning by a towering Year 9 boy. The 11 year old is good at his schoolwork and recently played a leading role in the Year 7 drama night. The Year 9 boy swears at him and calls him a 'wuss'. But he doesn't hit back.

My family doctor says that this is not an isolated case. She sees bullied children often. Some of them are hurt;some of them are nervous wrecks. Why do so many boys bully others, she asks?Good Question. I reject the argument that the real world is a tough place and therefore children have to get used to the idea that the bullies who hurt them are just a harsh fact of life. I thought there was a place for able and talented children in the world and especially at school. Surely it is the bullies who are the wusses-weak and ineffective human beings-not the good kids.

In the real world, too, there is a cost for everything we do these days. Think about the cost of bullying:the fear and what it does to youngsters; the injuries, the illnesses and the cost of medical and hospital treatment; the emotional and financial strain on parents; the loss of good students to a school; and the stress on teachers.
