或許對外國人來說, 並不容易接受(或了解)這樣的觀念, 所以我加了一個[could].
Prosperity in youth, unemployment in middle age, and affairs in late life could make three of the major disasters in a man's lifetime.

A wonderful sharing of yours!
I had been pondering on what you pointed out above, and I think that's why proverbs or sayings are valuable: concise but encompassing and inspiring.
They are more like the essence of wisdom than thxtbooks to teach people.

It's when we want to express the most by saying the least that we turn to these words of wisdom, so I suppose it's ok to leave the saying as it is.

Well, just look at the examples of Macaulay Culkin & Lindsay Lohan..then you'd agree why 少年得志 is not a good thing....

Macaulay Culkin is the kid from "Home Alone"...

Have to agree with Kevin. I wrestled with different translation alternatives, and still was not quite satisfied with my final choice. Appreciate Elisa "thinking out loud" :-) with various possibilities. That's pretty nice. I just hope this one does get removed.

I am not sure Paris Hilton would agree with this; but I am sure Hugh Hefner would strongly disagree. Not that the saying is wrong...at all.

Just some of my opinions.
Why do we think that they are considered as three big misfortunes?
少年得志大不幸～怕的就是人生在青春年少時就得到成功，反而會容易變得不知珍惜或不知謙卑，而犯了驕奢倨傲，懈怠懶散的壞習慣，到後來很可能會摔得更慘跌得更痛. See http://tw.knowledge.yahoo.com/question/question?qi...

Why do we think that 臨老入花叢 is a misfortune?
Uusually it means 老了有外遇, 最後搞得妻離子散、人財兩失或心神不寧、事業垮掉. See http://paulfrankmonkey.pixnet.net/blog/post/243350...

Based on that, I would translate it like this.
1. Life’s three big misfortunes: Success in youth, unemployment in middle age and adultery in old age.

2. To be successful in youth, to be jobless in middle age and to have amours in old age are the three big misfortunes in life.
3. To be young and successful, to be middle aged and unemployed, and to be old aged and adulterous are the three big misfortunes in life.

I will also update this at this site. http://elisaenglish.pixnet.net/blog

As I think more about this, I would change the translation of 少年得志 to better reflect why 少年得志 is a misfortune.
These are the revised translations.
1. To have early success but unsustainable, to be jobless in middle age, and to have adultery in old age are the three big misfortunes in life.

Ya. I was thinking more of how you could explain it to others not exposed to Chinese culture and that is why I change the translation of 少年得志. As a matter of fact when I first glanced at this, I thought that there was a typo that it should be 少年不得志.

Not until I went online and did more research did I realize that it truly meant 少年得志. :) So I would think that outsiders would be confused more.

By the way, as long as I don't answer the questions, I don't think that they will be removed. :)
Just remember to answer questions with clear subject line. This one is pretty clear to me.

I was thinking about "Britney Spears". I do know "Lindsay Lohan" from the movie "Parent Trap", but I don't know who "Macaulay Culkin" is. :)
2009-10-26 05:30:23 補充：
Oh, now I know who he is.
I do agree with roujenho. Sometimes, getting success in early age does not mean a bad thing. There are people who are so talented that they have success in their entire life even when they were young.
2009-10-27 01:26:38 補充：
By the way, someone has questioned the usage of "in old age". The right usage would be "in old age", "in middle age", "in early age", as we use:
• at for a PRECISE TIME
• in for MONTHS, YEARS, CENTURIES and LONG PERIODS
• on for DAYS and DATES
