我的一份化學pre-lab assighment

Question 1

identificaiton of polar groups present in some components of leaf extract

1. beta-Carotene(C40H56)

2. Rhodoxanthin(C40H52O2) [a Xanthophyll]

3. Lutein(C40H56O2) [a Xanthophyll]

4. Chlorophyll a

Question 2

Given that both silica gel and alumina contain a polar oxygen surface and some hydroxyls:

why do you think that the carotenes move more rapidly with the solvent than the xanthophylls?

    I recommand you go to wikipedia and type in the molecular name. Once you get the structure of the molecules, you should be able to answer question 1.

    I give you the hint for question 2. The lesser interaction molecule the faster it moves. Both silica gel and alumina are hydrophilic with polar groups.
