"This discovery required superb adaptive optics, a system that combines computers, mechanical actuators, and optics to remove the distorting effect - twinkling - caused by Earth's atmosphere," said Edberg. "The adaptive optics system steadied the image of the star and planet so that the image of the planet would not be lost in the glare of the twinkling star and could be fed into an instrument called a spectrograph."

Scientists are using the data from the spectrograph to study the faraway planet's atmosphere. "The spectrograph spreads the light of the planet into its component colors, much as rain can spread white sunlight into a rainbow," Edberg said. "This type of investigation allows astronomers to determine the gases composing the planet's atmosphere and their abundances."

At seven to 10 times the mass of Jupiter, it's unlikely that the newly analyzed planet will have any similarities to Earth. But the new discovery is a sign that astronomers are not only finding new exoplanets at a blistering pace - they're also finding out what they're made of.
