Engine surge

Gas turbine engine are designed to avoid the conditions that allow surge to develop, but the possibility of surge still exists in engines that are improperly adjusted or have been abused. Engine surge will occur any time the combustion chamber pressure exceeds by that in the diffuser and it is identified by a “popping” sound which is issued from the inlet housing , since there is more than one cause for surge , the resultant sound can range from a single-carburetor backfire type pop to a machine gun rapidity , the noise is accompanied by a very noticeable fluctuation of the engine speed and torque instrument . r?eated surging and the attendant transient torsional loads from the engine can cause damaged to the airframe component , and so must be avoided . the engine is not usually damaged by surge , unless severe surging occurs repeatedly surging usually indicates that engine operation is not normal , that an investigation should be made to determine the cause , and steps should be taken to correct the condition.To further understand the T-53-L-13 engine, please refer to GAS TURBINE ENGINE FAMILIARIZATION MANUAL.
